Matthew 12:38-42(HCSB)
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” 39 But He answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation; and look—something greater than Jonah is here! 42 The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look—something greater than Solomon is here!
Matthew 16:4 (HCSB)
4 An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.
Luke 11:29-32 (HCSB)
The Sign of Jonah
29 As the crowds were increasing, He began saying: “This generation is an evil generation. It demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and look—something greater than Solomon is here! 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation, and look—something greater than Jonah is here!

“Perfect prophet, priest and King/Christ became the reckoning/In His body, bore my sin/Now to all who trust in Him/God has mercy...” “Nineveh” by Brooke Ligertwood. “The prophet Jonah was instrumental in one of the greatest revivals in history. Under his preaching, the whole city of Nineveh repented of their sin and turned to God for mercy. A nation...humbled themselves in God’s eyes and turned from their paganism. Yet Jesus said, ‘Now someone greater than Jonah is here’” (Got Questions app). Jesus said in the verses today that he was greater than Jonah. Only Jesus was perfect-because he was fully man and fully God. I will finish today with one of my favorite verses, Hebrews 12:2, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...” Make that your prayer today.
