Matthew 9:35-38 (HCSB)
The Lord of the Harvest
35 Then Jesus went to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. 36 When He saw the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were weary and worn out, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

As Jesus is moving crowd to crowd, He had compassion because, “they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Jesus not only saw their physical needs, but He also saw the hunger and desperation within. They were lost souls crying out for help. In this time, Jesus turned to His disciples and said, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few.” This week we saw Jesus extend His everlasting mercy. It is important in this chapter to recognize that those who had faith in Jesus and believed in Him, those who reached for Him when they were in need, they were the ones who were healed by His mercy. Jesus ends chapter 9 by calling His disciples to extend His mercy. He’s calling the same compassion that moves His heart for these people to move theirs so that they may go and serve. When we feel the true power of Jesus’ mercy we are called to more. Our eyes are opened to see the people around us who need the same grace and compassion the Lord gives us.
