Luke 1:5-7 (HCSB)
Gabriel Predicts John’s Birth
5 In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah’s division named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 Both were righteous in God’s sight, living without blame according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord. 7 But they had no children because Elizabeth could not conceive, and both of them were well along in years.

In our opening passage the physician, Luke, is affirming the truth of spiritual teachings to Theophilus. There is a very specific description of Zechariah, the priest, and his wife Elizabeth, a descendant of Aaron. One thing I have learned over the years is that when God gives us very specific details in scripture it is important to understand why. In this case, Zechariah and Elizabeth’s lineage through the Levitical family is important for what is to come. They are both described as righteous and blameless, walking with the Lord. What an honor to be described in that way! I have had hopes and dreams in my life that never came to fruition, and I bet you have, too. Sometimes in this life the things we dream of don’t happen because the opportunity passes us by, the timing is off, circumstances get in the way, or we just get too old to become a quarterback or prima ballerina. It’s possible that Zechariah and Elizabeth may have experienced these same feelings as a childless couple. BUT GOD! His timing and calling are never late when it comes to fulfilling His purpose.
