Psalm 23:5-6 (HCSB)
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.
Nathan Putty
Such an inviting set of scriptures, isn’t it? David speaks of a table prepared by the Lord! That’s a meal I can’t wait to attend. The line that stuck out to me here was, “In the presence of my enemies.” It sounds a little boastful at first and maybe it is. After all, I’m not in David’s head and I can’t know for sure. But I think he may be speaking of how God has remained faithful through all his struggles, as he faced all his foes. David’s enemies would have seen and witnessed this little shepherd do all these awesome things. I look at verse 6 and I see the endgame. Scripture reminds us of how broken and in need of God we are. In our sin nature, it can sting to be reminded of that. But God. He never abandons us, even when we deserve to be left high and dry. Thank you for pursuing us, Lord, even when we don’t pursue you like we should. Thank you for not giving up on us. Thank you, most of all, for the invitation to come and sit at your feet.
