Faith Guides Our Words
James 3:1-2  (HCSB)

Controlling the Tongue
3 Not many should become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment, 2 for we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a mature man who is also able to control his whole body.

Mark Jenkins
Those who know me, know I can be sarcastic. I have often had “intense fellowship” with my wife, Becky, only to find out we really were not disagreeing...but she did not like my tone. As I have read through these verses and those coming after, James is speaking directly to the issue of misguided speech and how errant teaching might adversely affect the congregation. Teachers will receive a stricter judgment as this role is important in the role and life of the church. I think the heart of this discussion can be if you want to “see” your heart, you may want to “watch” your tongue. The words we speak are very important and the life we lead behind those words is equally important. Controlling the tongue can be a battle each and every day. We have to focus on our tone, the actual words we speak and our delivery. It is important for a teacher, but it is also important for all of us to watch what and how we say things. Let’s strive for our hearts to be so aligned with Christ that only positive things come from our mouths!
