Numbers 20:6-8  (HCSB)
6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting. They fell down with their faces to the ground, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 The Lord spoke to Moses, 8 “Take the staff and assemble the community. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will yield its water. You will bring out water for them from the rock and provide drink for the community and their livestock.”

We know from previous verses that the Israelites were tired, hungry, and thirsty, and they were losing trust in the leadership of Moses and Aaron after being brought into a land without food and water. After the community confronts Moses and Aaron, they seek guidance from the Lord. God gave them clear instructions. Moses was instructed to take his brother, along with the community and his staff to gather at the rock and to SPEAK to the rock. God tells Moses that water will pour from the rock. I don’t know about you, but I have never seen water pour from a rock after I spoke to it. I also cannot recall ever speaking to a rock. It seems here that the instruction given to Moses seems impossible just as the people being taken through a land of no food and water seems like an impossible way to get to the promised land. How will Moses respond to God’s instruction? Lock in my friends. Read tomorrow’s message to find out! I pray today that when faced with difficulties, you will seek guidance from the Lord our God.
