Numbers 20:9-13  (HCSB)
9 So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence just as He had commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron summoned the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?” 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that a great amount of water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. 12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust Me to show My holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I have given them.” 13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the Lord, and He showed His holiness to them.

If you read with us yesterday, you know that God gave Moses very specific instructions to speak to the rock (not to strike it). Moses, with his God given free will, decides to strike the rock (twice) rather than speaking to it. This act of disobedience proves that Moses did not trust in God’s plan and perhaps wanted the glory to be his own. God, with all His mercy and grace, still allows water to pour from the rock. He provides for the people despite Moses’s lack of trust and disobedience. God tells Moses and Aaron that because they were disobedient and did not prove God holy in the sight of the people, they will not enter the promised land. We see here the importance of obedience in leadership and learn that even leaders are subject to consequences. I pray that we trust in God and His plan even when it seems impossible. I pray that we are obedient to honor God and let His works be seen though us.
