Believers Find God’s Blessings Through Obedience
Deuteronomy 26:16-19 (HCSB)
Covenant Summary
16 “The Lord your God is commanding you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. You must be careful to follow them with all your heart and all your soul. 17 Today you have affirmed that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in His ways, keep His statutes, commands, and ordinances, and obey Him. 18 And today the Lord has affirmed that you are His special people as He promised you, that you are to keep all His commands, 19 that He will elevate you to praise, fame, and glory above all the nations He has made, and that you will be a holy people to the Lord your God as He promised.”
Mike Brown
In this passage, the Children of Israel had been given the suggestions from God (er’ I mean the laws and commandments) that they were to observe. They had also made a promise to God that they would follow Him. Moses then charged them to keep the statutes and judgements of God “with all their heart and soul”. If Moses were to speak to Temple Baptist Church today, there is no doubt in my mind that he would present us with the same charge. How many times are we like the Children of Israel in that we pick and choose which of God’s suggestions (er’ I mean commandments) that we want to do, and ignore or blindly disregard those that we don’t want to follow –especially if a peer pressure of being different from the crowd will be evident. Verse 18 (KJV) says that we are to be a peculiar people to the world. That doesn’t mean that we are to be weird, but that our life should definitely stand out as someone who doesn’t fit into the world’s mold. Verse 19 - That we will be a “Holy people”, is God’s intent for us. That is why He gave us His suggestions (er’ I mean commandments).
