 Matthew 4:1-4 (HCSB)
The Temptation of Jesus

4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil. 2 After He had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, He was hungry. 3 Then the tempter approached Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 But He answered, “It is written:
Man must not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

I have done some fasting in the past and 3 days with just water was all I could do without passing out. Forty days, really? This is where I gain most respect for my Savior. Israel failed in the wilderness, but Jesus succeeded. His victory over temptation means He is able to sympathize with our weaknesses and provides us with victory through His sacrifice and righteousness. He also fought with the Word. Anytime I am tempted, I am reminded my hope comes from Him. I have no power without His power. It is possible to escape temptation this way. My victory is HIS! In Him we live, move, and have His spirit to act according to His good, pleasing will.
